Charles Gwathmey

Floor Plan

Solution Statement

This law firm is inspired by the lightness and sleekness of Charles Gwathmey's work. I was influenced by him when choosing which materials to use for all of the surfaces. The usage of white paint and cream flooring along with a cherry wood for the furniture help make the space hopefully look like one that Mr. Gwathmey would design himself.

Material:
Emser Freemont Beinge Marble
Product Number and Color:
Item #: 43019    Model #: MRBLFREEBE1212
Space Used:

Characteristics:
Polished
Sustainability:
Marbles range from 5-7.5 on the MOHS hardness scale.
Installation:
The marble in my space is installed in tile form. The marble is secured in the ground with grout and then polished and sealed. It is important to seal the marble with a low odor, low VOC sealant. Once the marble is installed upkeep is easy.
Maintenance:
The easiest and least expensive way to maintain a marble floor is through daily housekeeping. First, catch dirt, water, and ice-melting salts at the door by placing large mats with waterproof backings at all entrances; salt dissolves and pits marble. Second, keep the floor clean of superficial dirt by using a minimum amount of plain water (warm is best) and a cotton string mop. Frequent mopping will help prevent soil from penetrating the surface. Whenever possible, quickly blot spills, especially oil and grease, to minimize their absorption into the stone.

Elements and Principles of Design

http://trendszine.com/interior/2010/07/11/decoration-of-the-area-to-enlarge.html
There are seven elements of design: line, shape, direction, size, textrue, color, and value. This room is a great example of line.
The red and white stripes definitely draw your eye to the wall and the stripes are even continued in the bedding as well as in the furniture. Because the color flows from wall to bed, it draws the eye downward. There are, however, many horizontal lines too. the shelving for the desk and the beds along with the two pictures and the bookshelf over the bottom bunk give some variety to the space and help break up the lines so that your eye can focus on different things in the room.
Another element that was used in this room is color. Red and white are such a striking combination that it is bound to draw somebody's eye to it.They tried to keep all the wood as light as possible to blend in with the white and it worked pretty well.
There is repetition in the stripes, being on the walls and also on the bed

This room features the elements of texture and value and also the principle of contrast.
There are many different textures in this room. The television cabinet and coffee table are a very high-glossed, black wood while the rug is very soft and fluffy looking. The chairs look hard and smooth.
The green chair is the accent color in this room. It clearly is a bold color choice to put in the room and it works. The brightness of the green draws the eye to it and makes it a very interesting piece in the room.

This room features the element of line and direction. The wood planks on the floor all draw the eye towards the back of the photo, as well as the patio table and chairs, the sofa, coffee table and television. The staircase in the back of the picture help add interest to the room and it is one of the focal points in the room because of the very odd blind-like feature it has to it.
